Student Politics is an obstacle to the student’s progress. Because of politics during student life, he neither becomes a complete student nor a complete politician. He just becomes a “Jack of all and master of none.” Present incidents also clarify this statement. Students acquire low marks in exam for being unable to devote required time for study because of political involvements. It results into personal sadness as well as misunderstanding in family. These outcomes lead them to opt for such a path that leads them to the eternal pit of politics. Yes, they decide to go for political pressure to improve their results instead of thinking of trying their own best. This gives birth to student revolution. Then the series of padlock, strike, destruction, etc. break out and these acts are given the name of ‘struggle for improvement’ which slowly becomes a tradition. Then, the words like rule, management and regularity become a history in colleges and universities. The nation builders of the country move in the path of destruction and so called politicians become proud of getting able leaders to work for them. These acts have direct influence on those students who really wanted to become a doctor or an engineer; on those students who value the millions of money they have paid for their study and on those students who realize themselves as the caretaker of their parents’ self-respect. It’s high time that we discouraged such a tradition that destroys the whole system like a rotten potato causes the whole sac to decay.
However, student politics is not the only cause for educational deterioration. It is also the contribution of the colleges and universities that created a favorable environment for the germination of this political seed. The first cause is not being able to bind them into written rules. How can anyone trust and follow the rules that change as per person and situation? Rules must be rigid and irreversible. Students must be made aware of all the rules at the time of admission and should be provided with a ‘Students’ Handbook’ that describes all the things that he can and cannot do during his study. He should also be made to sign the written document of rules so that violation may lead him to legal treatment. More importantly, university itself should be disciplined and act as per concrete written rules which can be an example to others.
Additionally, this issue should get a serious concern from government level as well. It should be accepted that able political leaders can’t be produced by irrigating political ideologies in engineering and medical colleges. Better approach would be to establish a new university named “Political University of Nepal” and admit all their prospective political leaders into that university. I’m sure that the university would be able to yield the world class politicians who would have gained 100% of political knowledge, not a mixture of several professions. As we know, compelling a mongo tree to produce an orange branch can never give a desired outcome.
